LAWTELL THE ART CAT - Six

Summertime, when the living is easy ... This painting says summer to me. It’s full of mementos: A to Z of time gone by. There’s a touch of nostalgia here, remembering the sunny past. The heat of August seems so far away in our frigid 70-degree November.

And this painting has memories of its own. Invited to hang in a royal exhibition, it spent a summer in Monte Carlo, with other paintings from around the world. My humans had a grand time going to visit it. At the opening reception, illustrious international artists attacked the buffet table like they hadn’t eaten in weeks. I can relate to that, it’s just the way I approach breakfast every morning. Woe betide my human if she tries to sleep late, I howl like a banshee.

In the painting, there’s old fashioned Mardi Gras beads--don’t see many of those any more! The elegant silk fan came from Oriental Trading on Bourbon Street, the hat from Williamsburg. I wonder what kind of bird the feather on that hat came from? They call this style of painting “trompe l’oeil” when it fools us into thinking we’re looking at the real thing. Me, I’d rather tromp that bird, make his feathers fly.

Just roll over the image above to see me in my summer finery looking most demure. But can’t you see the glint in my eye? Looks can be deceiving!

Hang this painting in your house, visit Monaco online, and remember good times. They’ll be back!
