The Devil and the Details

paintings from the Chateau de La Napoule in France

When I first arrived at the Chateau de La Napoule inspiration hit me like a high speed train. I began nine oil paintings in thirteen days, something I have seldom done before. The combination of the ever present influence of the sculptor Henry Clews, the beauty of the Cote d'Azur, its peach colored light and the exact color of French paint to capture it with compelled me to work extremely hard. I have given the paintings in this series entitled "The Devil and the Details" lighthearted titles partly in tribute to the interesting sense of humor held by Mr. Clews.

It was a gift for me to come from the tragedy that is still the city of New Orleans and to find things to smile about. I don't intend to suggest that the work of Mr. Clews or myself is not serious only that often artists take themselves too seriously. I have worked to convey in these paintings a sense of what it is to, however briefly, call the Villa Marguerite "chez moi" and multiple rooms in the Chateau de La Napoule, my studio. It will always remain, both in my mind and in my work, a spectacularly unique experience.
